Matthew F. Appenzeller, MD completed his undergraduate training in Biology and Dramatic Arts at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill in 1997. Upon completion of his undergraduate degree, he joined the Teach For America program and taught 8th and 9th grade sciences in rural Louisiana until 2000. He earned his Doctorate of Medicine from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2004. He went on to complete his internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He remained at the University of Cincinnati to complete his residency in Ophthalmology and subsequently completed a Vitreo-Retinal Surgery Fellowship at the Cincinnati Eye Institute.
Dr. Appenzeller is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Appenzeller treats diseases of the retina and vitreous including diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, macular holes, and age-related macular degeneration. He uses the latest treatment approaches, including Lucentis and Avastin for age-related macular degeneration.
Dr. Appenzeller is a native of Columbia, SC. He resides in Elon with his wife, Margo, and their two children. Margo completed her undergraduate training in education of deaf children at the University of North Carolina – Greensboro and her graduate training at North Carolina State. They are both very happy to be back in North Carolina. In his spare time, Dr. Appenzeller enjoys spending time with his children, reading, scuba diving and cooking for friends and family.
